A socially inclusive Europe for a just world

Hedy d'AnconaWe live in a global world where travel and communication brings us to the far corners of the world. But what do we know of the diversity of peoples living in Europe? How active are we in meeting with young women and men from many diverse backgrounds. How connected are we, between economic classes, between ages and gender? How interested are we in all our cultures and sub-cultures evolving in different directions in our European context?

We can no longer ignore the signs of disconnect between citizens and politicians, between different groups of citizens. Where are the voices of enthusiastic leaders from civil society, young people, migrants and particularly young women? They can bridge gaps between generations, cultures, gender and lifestyles. We need to hear and raise the voices of the young, of women, of minorities to build another Europe. A socially inclusive Europe.

It means building a Europe which respects human rights. A Europe fostering and celebrating its cultural and artistic diversity. A responsible Europe which no longer lets its own economic and trade interests prevail over the needs of a just world - where fair trade, debt cancellation and the Millennium Development Goals are achieved. A Europe which works for a world in which everyone can be secure, knowing they have perspective, a future which includes good education, health and work. A fair and peaceful Europe, which plays a stronger role in supporting peace processes in the Middle East, in Africa, and in other parts of the world.

A responsible Europe and a just world is possible.
