Reflection paper on universal sustainability goals for a Post-2015 Agenda
With the Millennium Development goals rapidly coming to an end, the post-2015 agenda must be able to give adequate answers to the global problems, be they accelerated global warming, the growing gap between rich and poor, the financialization of the world economy or the disrespect for human rights.
A note drafted by global members of civil society, titled A Red Flag for Post 201, recommended to the members of the High Level Panel, as they prepared to meet in Bali, eight points that must be addressed:
Among these points was Economic and Financial Architecture. Civil society members urged a reform in the financial and trade regime, in order to ensure fair trade just sovereign debt workout mechanisms and stop illicit capital flows. The note also highlighted, Human Rights, Gender Justice, Peace and Conflict, Accountability and Corruption, Planetary Boundaries, Land and Water Grabs and Extractives Development model.
The discussions about any Post-2015 Agenda must address the structural obstacles and political barriers that prevented the realization of the MDGs. Without an honest assessment of these obstacles and barriers any so called “new” development goals will remain a paper tiger.
