| EU development policy and the Lisbon Treaty |

The Lisbon Treaty should lead to the strengthening of the EU’s development policy. It clearly establishes that its development policy provides the principal framework for its cooperation with all developing countries. The Treaty creates essential political machinery that could reinforce Europe’s leadership in development assistance, which by 2010 is due to rise to two-thirds of all global aid. However the creation of a new EU foreign policy chief could sideline and politicise Europe’s aid-giving, and reduce it to being a tool for the EU’s foreign policy objectives. On Tuesday the 26 February in the Bibliothèque Solvay, Brussels, Eurostep Director Simon Stocker is taking part in a conference organised on the topic “Is EU development aid entering a new era in the wake of the Lisbon Treaty?” The key theme of conference is the likely impact of the new treaty on the EU’s efforts to tackle poverty and promote economic growth in the developing world.
