Assessing EU cooperation with the ACP Print E-mail

ES-RT_v3-1Brussels. 4 December 2007.  At a Round Table discussion organised by Eurostep and EEPA European Commission Deputy Director General for Development, Bernard Petit,  said that supporting the achievement of the Millennium Development goals was about promoting economic growth in developing countries, not just financing health and education. He indicated that on the basis of 70 country strategies for African, Caribbean and Pacific nations 15% of EC aid was earmarked for governance, 30% for infrastructure, 3.4% specifically for health and 3% specifically for education.  47% of the EC's programmed aid would be provided through budget support.  Dutch MEP Thijs Berman called for the ACP country strategies to be subject to the same democratic scrutiny as those for other developing countries.  Meanwhile the Ambassador of Mauritius accused the European Commission of promoting regional disintegration within the ACP through their intense pressure on individual countries to sign interim trade agreements.  See main points from the Round Table
