CanessaThe European Union is a community born of a desire for peace and stability, and based upon a commitment to the values of democracy, equality, solidarity, social justice, human rights, tolerance and the international rule of law. It is also a unique model of cooperation amongst states, and a testament to the importance of recognising strength in diversity, fostering common interests, increasing collective prosperity and building strong and secure relationships. As the world’s largest provider of development aid, the European Union has both the means and the mandate to be a truly effective cooperation partner. It must rise to this challenge by ensuring that the goal of eradicating poverty is the mainstay of its relations with all developing countries. By placing development cooperation at the heart of its external relations agenda, the European Union can fulfil its potential as a trusted partner in global efforts to create a fair world without poverty and inequality. Our Vision of Europe is a union which upholds our shared values, which recognises our role in the global partnership for development, and which translates its commitments into results.
