1962- 1965 Producer, Host, Editor at VARA-NOS Television 1965- 1975 Lecturer in Social Geography at the University of Amsterdam 1975- 1982 Director of a Center of Policy Research for Government 1974- 1981 Member of the Dutch Senate, for the Labour Party (PvdA); Spokesperson for Public Housing, and Town & Country Planning 1981-1982 State Secretary of Social Affairs and Employment, responsible for Emancipation issues, Working Conditions and Adult Education 1984-1989 Member of the European Parliament Chair of the Commission on Equal Rights for Women Chair of the Commission on Social Affairs and Employment 1989-1994 Dutch Minister of Welfare, Public Health and Culture 1994-1999 Member of the European Parliament; Vice- chair of the European Committee of the Social Democrats; Until 1996 Chair of the Commission of Urgent Resolutions (dealing with Political and other Emergencies, Human rights and indigenous issues); From 1996 Chair of the Commission of Justice and Home Affairs, and thus Spokesperson on issues regarding Refugees, Minority Rights, Human Rights within the EU, and Drugs. 1999 Onwards Chair of various cultural institutions; Government advisor on Welfare Policies; Free-lance Journalist Since 1995 Chair of the Board of Novib (the Dutch Oxfam)
