Poverty

According to the UN, 70% of the people living in poverty are women.

Inequality in education

42.8% of the women in the developing countries can read – 68% of the male proportion.

Work burden and time allocation

In urban areas in Indonesia, women work 399 minutes per day and men 356. Women spend 76% of these on non-market activities and men 23%.

In rural areas in Bangladesh, women work 545 minutes per day and men 496. Women spend 65% of these on non-market activities and men 30%.

On a national level in India, women work 457 minutes per day and men 391. Women spend 65% of these on non-market activities and men 8%.

In the Netherlands, women work 308 minutes per day and men 315. Women spend 73% of these on non-market activities and men 31%.

Inequality in economic activity

55.3% of the women in the world are economically active – 68% of the male rate.

In the LDCs the rate is 64.8% as compared to 51.1% in OECD-countries.
