Women's Rights Are Human Rights
On December 10, 1995 Amnesty International,
in conjunction with AI's Committee on Women's
Human Rights, will present a symposium: Human
Rights Are Women's Rights. The day-long event
will explore the challenges women face in
defining human rights and in making connections
between international and domestic women's
human rights issues.
The keynote speakers will be Kim Marie Thorburn, M.D.,
Vice Chair of Amnesty International's Board of Directors;
Ramona Ripston, Executive Director, ACLU of Southern
California; and Dolores Huerta, Co-Founder and first Vice
President of the United Farm Workers of America. Three
panels of speakers will discuss "International Perspectives
on Women's Human Rights", "Women's Human Rights in the
US", and "Linkages Between International and Domestic Women's
Human Rights Issues". Soraya Mire will present her film,
"Fire Eyes", an expose of female genital mutilation, and lead
a discussion afterward.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at UCLA's Dodd
Hall. Parking at UCLA is $5. An entrance fee of $5
is payable at the door. This event is funded in part
by a grant from the AIUSA Special Initiatives Fund.
